What Does an Optometrist Do?

An optometrist (Doctor of Optometry, OD, sometimes titled optometric physician) gives comprehensive eye exams, refracts and prescribes glasses and contact lenses, and diagnoses and treats eye disease such as glaucoma, dry eye and infections within the state's scope of practice.

ODs work in private practices, private-equity groups, optical chains and vision centers, OD-MD and ophthalmology practices, the VA, IHS, the military, hospitals and community health centers.

Every state requires the four-year OD degree, the NBEO board exams and a state license.
